Japanese pro Advice to students – How to Draw a Character Standing Sideways

Hello everyone.

Many people have the same problems when they draw.

Let’s use it as a reference when you draw illustrations and manga!

How to draw a character standing facing sideways

Sutudent

Hello! This is a draft I am working on. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you very much!

Teacher

Well done! You’ve had a really great go at a difficult lesson! This drawing shows a very nice situation of Marcille reaching out her hand!

The first thing that needs to be fixed overall is to check the proportions in this drafting phase. you will make faster progress if you are aware of the proportions of both the face and the body!

Each point is explained below.

  1. Be aware of the silhouette of the composition. The composition is lovely, with the hand reaching out to the viewer, but the hand is in the silhouette. You can create a better composition by turning the hand outward and adding movement to the silhouette!
  2. Pay attention to the balance of the face. The eyes should be slightly lower than half of the face. For fan art in particular, look at the facial balance and the shape of the eyes and nose in the original work and draw them to resemble the characters. You should draw it as if it were a portrait.
  3. Draw the arm at the back of the screen by knowing the position of the elbow, even if it is only approximate.

Keep up the good work!
