Japanese pro Advice to students – How to draw male character’s face

Hello everyone,

Many people have the same problems when they draw.

Let’s learn about drawing techniques again, this time by referring to advice given by a professional Japanese teacher in response to a question from a real student.

Let’s use it as a reference when you draw illustrations and manga!

How to draw male character’s face

Student

This one was quite a challenge due to how different a male characters face can be compared to a female character.

I find it is a bit hard to find the right places for the eyes, nose and mouth and sometimes the head turns out too long compared to the face. Despite that, I believe i got the outline of the head shape correctly and I know I will get better through practice.

Thank you for any feedback you provide on this! I’m truly grateful for it as it helps me get better and understand more.

The man’s face is very well drawn! You also did an excellent job finding reflection points yourself! This will definitely contribute to your improvement!
For the next step, I have noted some points in the attached image.

1)Note: Don’t forget to draw eyebrows!

2)About the position of the mouth and the length of the jaw: The position of the mouth should be between the nose and the jaw.

3)Draw the back of the head. The back of the head should be slightly visible at the top of the ears. Drawing this will make the face look even more natural! Note the shape of the head under the hair as you go along. Draw enough hair so that the skin part of the head is not visible.

Keep up the good work!
